Nominations open for the 2024 Rural and Regional Journalism and Photography Awards

The Rural Press Club of Victoria today launches three new award categories in its refined 2024 Rural and Regional Journalism and Photography Awards.

Nominations for the annual awards open today for three weeks only, allowing Victorians an opportunity to celebrate the exemplary work of journalists and photographers.

Rural Press Club of Victoria (RPCV) president Bryce Eishold said the club’s executive and supporters had worked hard behind-the-scenes to conduct an independent review of the awards program and implement new changes for 2024.

The awards are an important opportunity to celebrate the benefits of quality journalism in regional communities, especially at a time when newsroom resources are contracting,” Mr Eishold said.

Rural and regional journalists and photographers play a crucial role in providing accurate, timely and relevant information to their communities. The revised awards structure better reflects the environment they work in.

The new categories are:

  • Community Champion Journalist award
  • Most Innovative Journalism award
  • Best Coverage of a Breaking News Event award

The club adopted these new categories, along with other recommendations from an independent advisory panel of leaders from across Victoria’s media landscape.

RPCV also invites nominations in the following categories:

  • Media Outlet of the Year
  • Journalist of the Year
  • Young Journalist of the Year
  • Photographer of the Year
  • Best News Story – Written
  • Best News Story – Audio
  • Best News Story – Visual
  • Best Feature Story
  • Best On-Farm Story
  • Best Agribusiness Story
  • Best Sports Story
  • Best News Photograph
  • Best Local Photograph

In an effort to more equitably assess entries from different newsrooms, this year our judges will be asked to consider the resources available to a journalist or newsroom when assessing entries.

RPCV has also introduced a cap of three entries for each entrant.

The Rural and Regional Journalism and Photography Awards has a proud history of celebrating the important role local media plays in their communities. We look forward to continuing this with a fairer and more relevant awards structure in 2024.

RPCV encourages every newsroom in Victoria to celebrate the work of their reporters and photographers by entering their best work from the 2023-24 financial year.

“The awards night is always immensely popular, so we expect strong ticket sales again for our gala function at the Bendigo Town Hall.”

Entries will be accepted until 5pm Friday, August 23. Shortlisted entries will be announced in late September.

Entry Requirements

Please note, entries will only be accepted in PDF, YouTube or SoundCloud format.

Judges will not consider online stories that sit behind a paywall, unless the entrant provides the article in PDF format.

Entry is free on renewal of your RPCV membership subscription for the 2024/25 financial year. In order to nominate, you must be an RPCV member.

If you are unsure of your membership status, please email admin@ruralpressclubvictoria.com.au.

Stories eligible for nomination must have been published between July 1, 2023 through to June 30, 2024.

Please note, no extension for submissions will be granted beyond the August 23 deadline.

Any nomination that fails to comply with the stated requirements or lacks integral information will be considered invalid, and not considered by judges.

Each entrant may submit up to three entries in the awards. In this instance, each submission of an awards application form is considered one ‘entry’.

Should you have any queries relating to your entry, please feel free to contact the RPCV Awards Coordinator, Alannah Halloran at awards@ruralpressclubvictoria.com.au.
