ABC Gippsland reporter Bec Symons has been named the inaugural Rural Press Club of Victoria scholarship recipient for 2025.
For the first time in its almost 60-year-history, the Rural Press Club of Victoria is proud to be in a financial position to offer the scholarship to a journalist or photographer who lives and works in regional and rural Victoria.
This member-focussed initiative allows the recipient to undertake a study tour that will elevate regional journalism by covering an interstate or international issue or event, or attending a conference for professional development.
In its first year, the scholarship attracted a competitive field of entries. A shortlist of applicants was interviewed by the judging panel which included external independent judge, former Rural Press Club president Ed Gannon.
“I’m so honoured, excited and thankful for this opportunity,” Bec Symons said.
“It’s a fantastic initiative and shows that the RPCV is truly about giving opportunities and recognition to regional and rural journalists – if you are not a member sign up now to be eligible,” she said.
“As a mid-career journalist, it’s easy to get lost in the daily grind, without looking at the bigger picture. I chose to pitch a study tour focusing on bolstering my investigative skills and to learn all I can about data journalism.”
Bec will use the $6000 bursary to go to Washington DC for the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference in 2026.
“It’s so exciting because I will learn tangible skills that I can bring back to use on the ground, but also to share with my fellow regional journalists via press club mentorship and information sessions,” she said.
“This is a huge opportunity and once again, thank you to the RPCV committee for making it possible. This club gets better year after year and it’s a privilege to be part of it.”
The Rural Press Club of Victoria is seeking sponsorship to continue the scholarship in 2026.
